Die Fläche
Volume 1 1903/1904
Die Fläche (The Surface), published 1903/1904 by Felician Baron Myrbach, was a Viennese graphic arts periodical with only two volumes issued. The second volume was published in 1911. This was essentially a catalog of the skills of the Vienna Secession artists. The Union of Austrian Artists is an art movement that was formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian painters, graphic artists, sculptors and architects that supported more traditional artistic styles than the closely related Art Nouveau movement.
Die Fläche featured the work of artists associated with the Wiener Werkstätte, Bertold Löffler, Moriz Jung, Franz Karl Delavilla, Urban Janke, Wenzel Oswald, Gustav Marisch, Karl Schwetz, and others. This issue contained contemporary applications of graphic design with examples of poster art, books, wallpaper, textiles, stained glass, inlay, embroidery, monograms, business cards, and costume jewelry.
The first volume was published in 1903/1904 by Felician Baron Myrbach and had over 192 pages. Copies of the original periodical are exceptionally rare. This web page shows the pages present when I obtained this first issue. Some pages were missing. This was part of a printer's business that operated in Newton, Massachusetts in the 1920s to 1950s (estimated). This Die Flatche issue was separated and these are all the pages I found. Four are framed and hanging on the wall of my home (page 17, 67, 127, and 135).
